What HPV actually is.
HPV is a very common virus. Most adults meet it at some point, and most of the time the body clears it on its own.
Sometimes it doesn't clear. A few types can quietly cause cell changes over the years, and those changes are behind about 9 in 10 cervical cancer cases. Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among Filipino women, and unlike most cancers, this one has a vaccine.
The vaccine teaches your immune system to recognise the highest-risk HPV types before you ever meet them. That is why it works best given early, and why doctors recommend it from age 9. Already an adult? For many women up to 45 it is still worth doing, and that is exactly the conversation our doctors are here for.
One thing the vaccine doesn't replace: regular screening. Think of them as a team, one prevents, the other checks.
