The Mirena IUD is a hormonal contraceptive device used as a long-term birth control method, which is good for 3-5 years. Mirena releases a low, continuous dose of a synthetic progestin hormone called levonorgestrel directly into the uterus. Unlike birth control pills, this has a local rather than a systemic effect.
The Mirena IUD prevents pregnancy by thickening the cervical mucus, inhibiting sperm movement, and thinning the uterine lining. For some individuals, the Mirena IUD can significantly lessen menstrual bleeding and cramping and reduce the progression of endometrial hyperplasia to cancer.
Kindred’s Mirena IUD Insertion Package is an outpatient procedure. The initial OBGYN consult is required in-clinic for your doctor to assess your health history and physical condition prior to IUD insertion. A pap smear and transvaginal ultrasound are also required prior to insertion, to mitigate and address any potential infection or cervical abnormalities before you are deemed eligible for the IUD. An infection is a contraindication to the IUD and must be treated before insertion. Once treated or if no infection or uterine abnormalities are seen on the transvaginal ultrasound, the IUD may be inserted.
A recent copy of your doctor's prescription is required before checking out.
The Basic Mirena IUD Insertion Package includes the following:
1️⃣ (2) OBGYN consults
- Initial (usually to assess suitability of the Mirena IUD as a contraceptive method or for abnormal uterine bleeding)
- Follow-up (can be teleconsult)
2️⃣ (1) Pregnancy test in-clinic
3️⃣ Insertion of the Mirena IUD
4️⃣ Medication post-procedure
- Dexketoprofen 25mg x 9 (3 days post-insertion)
5️⃣ Menstrual pad
The Comprehensive Mirena IUD Insertion Package has the same inclusions as the Basic Package, with the addition of a Transvaginal Ultrasound following the procedure.
While Mirena IUD insertion is generally well-tolerated, individuals may experience mild discomfort, cramping, or spotting during or after the procedure. It is essential for individuals considering Mirena to consult with their healthcare provider to discuss their medical history, potential side effects, and to determine if the Mirena IUD is a suitable contraceptive option for them.
Note: The Mirena IUD can be inserted whether or not the patient is on their period.
The Mirena IUD is ideal for:
- Patients who experience heavy menstrual bleeding
- Patients with endometrial hyperplasia or bleeding due to precancerous endometrial pathology
- Patients who want a long-term contraceptive method
