An abscess is a boil or a painful collection of pus that has accumulated within the tissues under the skin. They can form swollen and inflamed lumps on any part of the body.

In this procedure, the surgeon will make a cut on the skin over the abscess to drain out the pus. Once the pus has been thoroughly removed, the cavity will be cleaned with antiseptic and covered with a sterile dressing without secondary closure. The pus from the abscess can be sent to the laboratory to identify the type of infection you have.

What to expect

For post procedure care, regularly clean the affected area with antiseptic solution and change the sterile dressing daily as the wound dries and closes. Avoid wetting the area. Expect slight pus leakage for a day or two post-procedure, but change the wound dressing immediately once damp.
