Depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) is a high dose of progesterone that is administered through intramuscular injections every one or three months. This injection is for contraception and/or control of heavy bleeding.
DMPA consists of either 50mg of depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) good for one month or 150mg of DMPA good for three months. The benefits of this injectable contraceptive include:
Pseudopregnancy state where periods may or may not occur
Long acting reversible contraceptive
No effect on future fertility
The DMPA injectable contraceptive is administered by a Kindred OBGYN and requires a prescription, to ensure that it is suitable for your needs, health concerns, and lifestyle. It is advised to consult with an OBGYN beforehand to determine how many shots are needed. Please note that the OBGYN or clinic staff may request for a transvaginal ultrasound or pregnancy test if the patient has no periods.
The DMPA shot is ideal for those who want a long lasting and reversible contraceptive, or those who want to control heavy bleeding and have gotten clearance through a prescription from an OBGYN.
